More Details about the Workshop:
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region countries, such as Morocco, political and social democracy are incomplete and and are still in its infancy. In general, the political landscape characterized by vague political and ideological identities and practices. That is why, the role of young women, and women in general, in political democracy/democratization and policy-making is of great importance. However, with the exception of the ‘Arab Spring’ wave of protests, there is a general lack of interest in political participation and activism. This is a multi-faceted phenomenon, one attributable to multiple factors, including lack of trust in the state, political actors, and democratic institutions, as well as lack of understanding of political processes and activist work. For girls and young women, the barriers to participation are much higher. Young women constitute a huge portion of the population in the region. And yet too many of them remain second rate citizens and are unable to participate fully in society. For example, many young women in Morocco, especially in rural areas, have never been to school, are unable to read and are unemployed.
And yet when empowered and given the right opportunities, girls and young women become effective and key drivers of change. Our Institute seeks to partner with these women, helping them participate in decisions affecting them, and strengthening their ability to benefit from and also advance basic ideals of human rights, democratic values, and social justice, as well as development issues such as health, education and employment.
The Workshop on Young Women, Democracy and Empowerment seeks to support the strengthening of democracy and good governance in the country by engaging young women in policy-making. This project will contribute to the political education of youth by increasing their knowledge of ideological matters both in the philosophical and practical dimensions of policy-making. It will give them a broad framework to judge and evaluate public policies and assist youth political organizations to develop their ideological and political identity and to develop policy-making capacities. In particular, the workshop, which will be conducted in Moroccan Arabic and Tamazight to reach the broadest audience possible, will:
- Help young women understand the conditions facing them, using both data from censuses, demographic and health surveys, and other sources, as well as auto ethnographic and personal accounts of the women concerned.
- Provide young women the skills they need to work with governmental agencies, civil society, donors, the private sector and youth-led organizations to advocate for more investment in young people as a development priority.
- Provide young women with the basic skills they need to be active participants in policymaking.
- Include existing and encourage the creation of independent, effective and sustainable organizations led by young people, especially women, to advocate for their human rights and development priorities.
The project will run in the form of a series of seminars and will be held in three Moroccan cities in July 2019.
