organizes a workshop on
Workshop on Civic Media and Democracy
to help empower youth and improve their civic media knowledge and skills today.

The workshop will be offered in Chicago (in person) and virtually (via Zoom), according to the following schedule:

This workshop will run for one full day, from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and will divided in two parts:
Part I: Foundations of Civic Media: The first part will provide a general overview of the theoretical concepts and debates on the public sphere and the role of journalism in informed citizenry and political participation. Participants will learn to engage with these concepts and with key debates and topics.
Part II: Current Challenges: The second part will discuss the current challenges facing civic media and democratic political participation. Topics include misinformation, disinformation, “fake news,” digital activism and social movements, as well as media regulation and capitalism.
Part II: Application and Practice: The third part will focus on the application of theoretical concepts in concrete cases and examples. Participants will analyze, discuss and decide, in groups, on specific experiential challenges and case studies. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in projects that help build their digital literacy (News Literacy Project’s Checkology) and their media activism skills.
Criteria for Participation

- Age 18‒30 years

- Basic communication and group collaboration skills
- Commitment to attending full training (full day from 10:00 am to 7:00 p.m.)
Workshop will be offered in Arabic and English at no cost to the selected participants.
Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.
